“Focus of Mikro/Makrokosmos are the Radiolaria, a series of 11 lamps made of 3D-knitted textile with glow-in-the-dark effect, inspired by microscopic organisms and the phenomenon of bioluminescence. They’re presented in a spatial installation with film. When the light is switched off, the Radiolaria leave a mysterious green afterglow. Each lamp has a different shape, but they’re all equally rotund and strangely scaleless. Are they bacteria? Plancton? Plant seeds? Or maybe planets?The Radiolaria are made from woven and knitted 3D spacer fabrics, which are normally hidden inside products and not used for optical purposes. The glow-in-the-dark effect – similar to the effect which everybody knows from kids’ stickers and toys – has been integrated into this technical textile. Thanks to the stiffness of the material and its 3D-structure, the soft lamps have natural volume and don’t require additional reinforcement. The force of gravity influences their final shape, making them charmingly imperfect.”

Bernotat&Co is a design studio based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, run by Anke Bernotat and Jan Jacob Borstlap. Among their recent projects are the widely published ChairWearcollection, the Cellular Loopchair in cooperation with Folkwang University of the Arts, the Triennial for Gispen and Tangramchocolate bars. essence of Bernotat&Co’s work is to ponder the poetry of normalcy, to tease the rules and discover exceptions, to heighten the contrast between the mundane and surprising. Within these vagaries of perception, the final result becomes an inspiring and practical product.
Anke Bernotat was born in Germany, studied Industrial Design in Wuppertal and worked as a designer for Norman Foster and Jasper Morrison in London as well as for n/p/k Industrial Design in Leiden (Netherlands). She has taught at Design Academy Eindhoven and currently holds a position as professor of Industrial Design at Folkwang-University of the Arts, Essen. In 2007, she established design studio Bernotat&Co in Amsterdam.
Jan Jacob Borstlap born in The Netherlands, studied Industrial Design in Delft, made a career switch into exhibition and graphic design at the multidisciplinary agency BRS Premsela Vonk (later Eden Spiekermann). Started working as as an independent exhibition designer in 2001 and joined Bernotat&Co in 2011 for Chair Wear, the first joint project in product design.

“Focus of Mikro/Makrokosmos zijn The Radiolaria, een reeks van 11 lampen gemaakt van 3D-gebreid textiel met glow-in-the-dark effect, geïnspireerd door microscopisch kleine organismen en het fenomeen van bioluminescentie. De objecten/ lampen zijn gepresenteerd in een ruimtelijke installatie met film. Als het licht wordt uitgeschakeld, laat de Radiolaria een mysterieus groen licht nagloeien. Elke lamp heeft een andere vorm, maar ze zijn allemaal even rond en een vreemd schaallos. Zijn het bacteriën? Plancton? Plant zaden? Of misschien planeten?
De Radiolaria zijn gemaakt van geweven en gebreide 3D spacer stoffen, die normaal verborgen zitten in producten en niet bedoeld zijn om te zien. Het glow-in-the-dark effect – vergelijkbaar met het effect dat iedereen kent van stickers en speelgoed voor kinderen – is geïntegreerd in dit technisch textiel. Dankzij de stijfheid van het materiaal en de 3D-structuur, hebben de zachte lampen van nature al volume en hebben geen extra versteviging nodig. De zwaartekracht beïnvloedt hun uiteindelijke vorm, waardoor ze zo charmant onvolmaakt zijn. “

Anke Bernotat werd geboren in Duitsland, studeerde Industrieel Ontwerp in Wuppertal en werkte als ontwerper voor Norman Foster en Jasper Morrison in Londen en voor n/p/k Industrial Design in Leiden (Nederland). Ze gaf les aan de Design Academy Eindhoven en heeft momenteel een positie als hoogleraar Industrieel Ontwerpen aan de Folkwang-Hochschule der Künste, Essen. In 2007 richtte ze ontwerpstudio Bernotat & Co in Amsterdam.
Jan Jacob Borstlap geboren in Nederland, studeerde Industrieel Ontwerpen in Delft, maakte een carrièreswitch in tentoonstellings-en grafische vormgeving aan het multidisciplinaire bureau BRS Premsela Vonk (later Eden Spiekermann). Begonnen als als zelfstandig tentoonstelling ontwerper in 2001 en sloot zich aan bij Bernotat & Co in 2011 voor Chair Wear, het eerste gezamenlijke project in productontwerp.
