Is it really as good as I hope it is? My expectations were so high, that I was a bit worried it could only be disappointing. But no! It was even better than I imagined.

For years, a visit to the Vitra Campus was on my wishlist. I even drove past Basel several times on my way to Italy. But until now, I never got the chance to stop by.

I can only say: please don’t wait as long as I did! Vitra Campus is a real design and architecture heaven. Especially now, with the new ” Shaudepot” designed by Basel- based architects Herzog & de Meuron who also designed the well-known VitraHaus.

At the Vitra Campus you find lots of design furniture, a museum, many exhibitions and beautiful architecture by renowned architects like Frank Ghery, Zaha Hadid, Alvaro Siza, Tadao Ando and many more. For more information and the agenda, I refer to the Vitra Campus Website.

So, I was thrilled to be invited for the opening of the Shaudepot and love to share it here with you.

Vitra has a huge collection of design items, consisting 7000 pieces of furniture and more than 1000 lighting objects, which show a long line of design and furniture history from Europe, the USA and all over the world. Designers like Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton, Alexander Girard and many others are presented.

All these years the design furniture and lighting fixture items did not have an actual spot where the collection could be shown to the public because the original Vitra design museum building was more and more used for the temporary collections. And these sometimes very delicate, old and new original pieces need special conditions to preserve them for the future. The original depot, where the items were kept was in a basement and not accessible for the public.

Now, with this new building “Shaudepot”, build on top of the original depot basement ,it’s there for you and me and every design lover, to explore. As said, a huge collection of historical and new key design objects is showcased in a big open space with high shelving units. In the basement, there is even more. There you’ll find a big chest of drawers, with materials, construction- and educational material.

My personal favorite was hard to find because I kept switching from one to the other. At the end, I came to the conclusion that I love many many of them. Some for the design, others for the materials or used techniques, or just for it’s history. But I really felt a bit proud to find so many Dutch Designs amongst the youngest pieces.

About the building itself: I loved it. I heard some people say that the didn’t find it that spectacular or inspiring. But to me, it refers to the original African huts, made out of clay, that protects the inside from to much sun and light.

For me it all made sense: it felt like the earth, presented by the red clay bricks, is protecting something very beautiful inside. Of course translated into a modern, very down to earth and minimal building. Besides that, I loved the beautiful texture of the facade, made out of bricks broken in half and put inside out, creating this great but minimal look.

After the tour, you can sit down in the new cafe the “Depot Deli” or do some shopping in the foyer at the “Shaudepot Shop” where you can find beautiful design items, presents and books.

Please make sure to stop by on your way to your holiday destination or on your way back! Or plan a special trip to this very inspiring design heaven. You don’t want to miss this. DESIGN COLLECTIE + GESCHIEDENIS

Is het echt zo goed als ik hoop dat het is? Mijn verwachtingen waren zo hoog, dat ik een beetje bang was dat het alleen maar tegen kon vallen. Maar nee! Het was zelfs mooier dan ik had gedacht.

Al jaren stond een bezoek aan de Vitra Campus hoog op mijn verlanglijstje. Ik ben zelfs diverse keren langs Basel gekomen op weg naar Italië. Maar tot nu toe haf ik nooit de kans om er ook te stoppen.

Ik kan alleen maar zeggen: wacht alsjeblieft niet zo lang als ik! De Vitra Campus is een echte design en architectuur hemel op aarde. Zeker nu, met het nieuwe “Shaudepot”, ontworpen door de uit Basel afkomstig architecten Herzog & de Meuron, die ook het bekende VitraHaus ontwierpen.

In de Vitra Campus vind je tal van design meubelen, een museum, vele tentoonstellingen en prachtige architectuur van beroemde architecten als Frank Ghery, Zaha Hadid, Alvaro Siza, Tadao Ando en nog velen meer. Voor meer informatie en de agenda, verwijs ik naar de Vitra Campus website.

Dus, ik was super blij dat ik werd uitgenodigd voor de opening van het Shaudepot en wil het hier op mijn blog graag met jullie delen.

Vitra heeft een enorme collectie van design items, bestaande uit 7000 meubels en meer dan 1000 lichtobjecten, die samen een lange lijn van design geschiedenis uit Europa, de Verenigde Staten en van over de hele wereld laten zien. Ontwerpers zoals Charles en Ray Eames, Verner Panton, Alexander Girard en vele anderen worden hier zij aan zij gepresenteerd.

Al die jaren beschikten deze waardevolle items niet over een eigen plek waar de collectie aan het publiek kon worden getoond. Dit omdat het oorspronkelijke Vitra Design Museum meer en meer gebruikt werd voor tijdelijke collecties. En deze, soms zeer delicate, oude en nieuwe originele stukken verdienden een speciale behandeling en opslag zodat ze ook in de toekomst nog te zien en te bewonderen zijn. Het originele depot, waar de items werden bewaard, was in een kelder en niet toegankelijk voor het publiek.

Nu, met dit nieuwe gebouw “Shaudepot” dat boven op de originele depot-kelder is gebouwd, het is de collectie voor jou en mij en elke design liefhebber toegankelijk om te verkennen. Zoals gezegd, er is een enorme collectie van historische en nieuwe spraakmakende design objecten tentoongesteld, in een grote open ruimte met hoge rekken. In het originele depot in de kelder is zelfs nog meer. Ook vind je daar grote lade kasten met diverse materialen, bouw- en educatief materiaal.

Mijn persoonlijke favoriet was moeilijk te vinden. Ik maar bleef wisselen van het ene naar het andere object. Tot ik tot de conclusie kwam dat ik geen echte faviriet heb: ik hou van heel veel van de ontwerpen. Sommigen om de vormgeving, anderen voor de materialen of gebruikte techniek, of gewoon vanwege de geschiedenis. Maar ik voelde me wel echt een beetje trots op zoveel Nederlands design tussen de jongste stukken van de colectie.

Over het gebouw zelf: ik vond het geweldig. Ik gehoorde sommige mensen zeggen dat ze het niet zo spectaculair of inspirerend vonden. Maar voor mij verwijst het gebouw naar de oorspronkelijke Afrikaanse hutjes, gemaakt van klei, die de binnenkant beschermen tegen te veel zon en licht.

Voor mij klopte het allemaal: het voelde alsof de aarde, gepresenteerd in de rode bakstenen, iets heel mooi s aan de binnenkant beschermt. Natuurlijk vertaald in een moder, zeer “down to earth” en minimalistisch gebouw. Daarnaast viel ik voor het mooie textuur op de gevel, gemaakt van in tweeën gebroken baksteen met de binnen kant naar buiten geplaatst, waardoor het een prachtige minimalistiche look creeerde.

Na het ronde museum kun je lekker wat eten of drinken in het nieuwe cafe de “Depot Deli” of gaan winkelen in de foyer bij de “Shaudepot Shop” waar je prachtige design accessires, grotere items, cadeautjes en boeken kunnen vinden.

Tip: Zorg ervoor om echt even te stoppen bij de Vitra Campus, op weg naar, of terug van je vakantiebestemming! Of plan een speciaal reisje naar dit zeer inspirerende ” Design Heaven”. Je wilt het niet missen. En buiten het nieuwe Shaudepot is er nog veel meer te zien op de Vitra Campus: kijkje op de Vitra Design Museum site voor meer informatie.

Wow! Nijmegen has a new Hotspot! It’s Design Hotel Blue, a sister of the award winning design Hotel Manna, which is just a few steps down the road.

I got the opportunity to stay overnight and explore this new concept of Hotel Blue. The hotel has one long stay apartment and 30 design rooms, of which I’ll show you one in a separate blogpost. Since there is so much to show you, I’ve made 2. This one is about Blue + Juliette.

Blue & Juliette is for the hotel guests but also for you and me. You can walk in during the day for a breakfast, lunch, meeting with friends or colleagues or to do some work at the Salon de Thé with its beautiful green wall. Or go for bites and drinks and lots of fun in the lounge and relax one of the comfortable XXXXXL sofa’s. Or sit at the Blue bar with it’s stunningly beautiful handpainted tile wall.

You can also join the chef while he is cooking in Juliette’s Cosina. Just sit at the cooking island with him, or take place at the big table and enjoy the most delicious appetizers. I tasted some of them and they are delightful.

For bigger meetings there are also two boardrooms available, where you can take the time, focus on your meeting and enjoy the high quality of hospitality that Blue offers.Besides this all, there is also an indoor shop JessyJee, where you can find gifts, art and exclusive fashion items for the ladies.Come and visit Blue & Juliette with it’s outstanding looks, service, hospitality fine food and drinks. Hotel Blue is pure candy for the eye, soul and mouth. I tell you…. Blue is the place to be!

Wauw! Nijmegen heeft een nieuwe hotspot! Design Hotel Blue, een zusje van het bekroonde Design Hotel Manna, dat is slechts een paar meter verderop.

Ik kreeg de kans om te overnachten en het concept van Hotel Blue te beleven. Het hotel heeft een “long stay” appartement en 30 design kamers, waarvan ik je er een ga laten zie in een aparte blogpost. Er zo veel mooist om te laten zien, dat ik er 2 posts van gemaakt heb. Deze gaat over Blue & Juliette.

Blue & Juliette is voor de hotelgasten, maar ook voor jou en mij. Je kunt gewooon binnen lopen voor een ontbijt, lunch, ontmoeting met vrienden of collega’s of om wat werk te doen in de Salon de Thé met zijn prachtige groene muur. Of ga voor de hapjes en drankjes en het plezier lekker in de lounge relaxen op een van de comfortabele XXXXXL sofa’s. Of neemt plaats in de Blue bar met zijn verbluffend mooie handgeschilderde tegel muur.

Je kunt ook aanschuiven bij de chef-kok terwijl hij kookt in Juliette’s Cosina. Gewoon samen aan het kookeiland met hem, of je neemt plaats aan de grote tafel en genieten van de lekkerste hapjes. Ik proefde er een aantal en ze zijn heerlijk.

Voor grotere bijeenkomsten zijn er ook twee boardrooms beschikbaar, waar je de tijd kunt nemen, concentreren op het verleg en geniet van de hoge kwaliteit van gastvrijheid die Blue biedt. Naast dit alles, is er ook een winkel JessyJee, waar je cadeaus, kunst en exclusieve fashion items voor de ladies kunt vinden.

Kom naar Nijmegen en bezoek Blue & Juliette met zijn prachtige interieur, super service en gastvrijheid en lekkere eten en drinken. Hotel Blue is een pareltje voor het oog, je ziel en mond. Ik zeg het je…. Blue is the place to be!

I’ve met Mary several times, it turned out we both studied Fashion design in Arnhem, and she is a genuine and passionated design lover. I truly believe she and her team will make something really special out of this magazine. One that you keep nearby for many reads for a long time.

Ben jij ook een liefhebber van interieur en design? Dan heb ik heb nieuws voor jou! Mary Hessing, voormalig hoofdredacteur van Interieur design magazines “Eigen Huis & Interieur” en “More than Classic” begint haar eigen tijdschrift WOTH Wonderful Things!

A few weeks after The Milan designweek 2016 it’s easier to see what was most impressive. The Moooi collection 2016 presentation was one of them.

At the via Savona 56 , Moooi transformed the space into a surprising and creative area. In the atrium, the furniture was installed in the dark with just spotlights on them. Like the Compression Sofa made out of marble by Paul Cocksedge. Or the Charleston Sofa, which looks like a Chesterfield sofa placed on the side. I loved the Floor lamp Filigree by Rick Tegelaar. Also the Anami Sofa by Lorenza Bozzoli, which was made out of beautiful deep blue velvet with degrade fringes. This sofa looks so tempting… If it wasn’t in the spotlights I think I could sit in it the whole day and just relax…

About the Marble Compression sofa:

‘I wasn’t thinking of designing a sofa,’ affirms Paul Cocksedge when talking about the Compression sofa. ‘I had a block of rectangular foam on my desk and I just pushed down one part and saw, almost in slow motion, this transformation, from an angular block to a curvaceous figure and thought, “it would be great if a person could sit there”. There were no sketches or technical drawings involved, instead we allowed the material itself to define the shape.’.

Behind the scenes, You could wander around several rooms, all with the new signature rugs and carpetings. Lot’s of colorful and artistic , ornaments and surreal designs. I can imagine some of you have to get used to this eye-catching floors, but I must say, It can make the room! Personally, I would love to combine these rugs with a more clean and empty space. But hey, that’s me. We all know that Moooi is about the theatrical design.

All the rooms were decorated as someone lived in it. This way you got an intimate warm and even a somewhat feminine feeling and a sense of home.

A lot of the designs were soft, and round shaped, with textured upholsteries like velvet and felt. Of course, the lighting objects were stunning, as Moooi always does. And the big oversized prints by photographer Rebecca Bathory were completing the setting.

Een paar weken na de Milan Designweek 2016 is het makkelijker om te zien wat het meest indrukwekkend was. De Moooi collectie 2016 presentatie was er een van.

Aan de via Savona 56, transformeerde Moooi de ruimte in een verrassende en creatieve omgeving. In het atrium, was het meubilair in het donker geïnstalleerd, met slechts de schijnwerpers op hen gericht. Zoals de Compression Sofa, gemaakt van marmer door ontwerper Paul Cocksedge. Of de Charleston Bank, die eruit ziet als een Chesterfield bank op zijn zij. En Prachtig, die vloerlamp Filigree ontworpen door Rick Tegelaar. Ook de Anami Sofa van Lorenza Bozzoli was bijzonder mooi, met het diepe blauw fluweel en met degrade franjes. Deze bank ziet er zo verleidelijk uit … Als ie niet in de spotlights stond, was ik er graag de hele dag op gaan zitten om gewoon even relaxen in drukke Milaan …

Over de Marble Compression bank:

‘Ik dacht niet aan het ontwerpen van een bank,’ bevestigt Paul Cocksedge wanneer we spreken over de compressie bank. ‘Ik had een blok van rechthoekige schuim op mijn bureau en die heb ik gewoon naar beneden geduwd, en zag, bijna in slow motion, deze transformatie, van een hoekige blok naar een gewelfde figuur en dacht: “Het zou geweldig zijn als er een persoon in kan zitten”. Er waren geen schetsen of technische tekeningen bij betrokken, maar we lieten het materiaal zelf de vorm definiëren. ‘.

Achter de schermen, kon je rond wandelen door verschillende kamers, allemaal met de nieuwe “Signature” tapijten en carpetings. Veel kleurrijke, artistieke, vol ornamenten en surrealistische ontwerpen. Ik kan me voorstellen dat sommigen van jullie even moeten wennen aan deze opvallende vloeren, maar ik moet zeggen, het kan de ruimte echt maken! Persoonlijk zou ik graag deze tapijten combineren met een strakke en lege ruimte. Maar hey, dat ben ik. We weten allemaal dat Moooi van de theatrale designs is.

Alle kamers zijn ingericht alsof er iemand woont. Op deze manier heeft de ruimte direct een intiem, warm en zelfs een ietwat vrouwelijk gevoel. En een gevoel van thuis.

Een groot deel van de ontwerpen waren zacht, met ronde vormen, met rijke bekledingen zoals fluweel en vilt. Natuurlijk, de verlichting ontwerpen waren prachtig, zoals Moooi dat altijd doet. En de grote oversized prints van fotograaf Rebecca Bathory waren de puntjes op de i van de setting.

There are important changes in our demands for products. We want them to be honest and trustful. Due to a general distrust, we are asking ourselves sincere questions about the products we are buying: Is it sustainable ? What about child labour ? The rights of the workers? The materials ?

Big warehouses are collapsing, probably one of the reasons is a big increase of online shopping. Our streetscape is changing, what will happen with all these empty buildings ? Start-ups, small businesses, handmade and crafts, where you can sit and have a drink and a chat, maybe see the product being made right in front of you. Sometimes we prefer to buy one good thing and pay a little more instead of 10 bad cheaper things. And maybe we can use all these empty buildings for housing for students and refugees, maybe they will have their own start-ups, with their local crafts.

Handicraft and honesty, natural products, recycled for example denim and restoring of clothes, but also embroidering, knitting and crochet are back. Like the beautiful embroidering from Eastern Europe end South America or handmade baskets from Africa. The color green gives us the feeling of nature and the authenticity of nature in all its sources. And we want green around us, plants inside and outside our habitat.

African Design

And then there is Africa, a big continent where a lot is happening, but we don’t hear so much about it. We can see African influences in our clothes and interior, like Vlisco and Moroso. For designers and creators, there are a lot of interesting developments. For example a cooperation between a western government institutions and companies. Design Network Africa, DNA, is financed by the Danish government, developed and coordinated by the Danish Centre for Culture, an independent institute. This project joins known designers from East, West and South Africa, whom are selected on originality, identity and product. This programme consists from cooperation and the support for local problems and mentoring, also learning new production systems, which has again a positive influence on other local entrepreneurs, who get inspired and learn from their expertise. The designers are supported by Danish creators and designers, Source is the organisation and also coordinates the import and export, of all products that are traded over the whole world.

Op dit moment zijn er belangrijke verschuivingen in de eisen voor onze produkten aan de hand. We willen steeds meer eerlijke producten, ontstaan uit een algemeen wantrouwen, gaan we ons steeds meer vragen stellen bij het kopen van een product, is het duurzaam ? Is het met kinderarbeid gemaakt ? Hoe staat het met de rechten van de arbeiders ? De materialen ?

Maar ook doordat de grote warenhuizen het niet meer redden, zoals V&D en Perry Sport, en door de grote groei van on line inkopen. Hierdoor is het straatbeeld al aan het veranderen. Er komen mooie kleine ondernemingen voor in de plaats, met handwerk en ambachten, eenmansbedrijven, waar je het product als het ware gemaakt ziet worden, waar duurzaamheid en milieu belangrijk zijn. In de winkel, ga je een belevenis door, misschien drink je er iets en heb je een goed gesprek. Sommigen kopen liever 1 keer iets moois en misschien duurder, dan dat we 10 x bij dat onbetrouwbare warenhuis. En al die grote winkel panden, zeker wel geschikt voor woningen, voor studenten of vluchtelingen, die weer hun ambachten uit hun land kunnen gaan uitvoeren.

Handwerk en eerlijkheid, natuurlijke producten, recycle van onder andere jeans, herstellen van je kleding, zodat het langer mee kan, maar ook borduren, breien en haken zijn helemaal terug. Zoals borduurwerk uit Oost Europa en Zuid Amerika en handgemaakte manden uit Afrika. Maar ook de kleur groen, want groen is de natuur en is dus echt en eerlijk. We willen steeds meer groen om ons heen, thuis maar ook buiten in onze leefomgeving, we willen de echtheid van de natuur en de eerlijkheid van voedsel en materialen.

Afrkaans design

En dan Afrika, enorm continent waar heel veel gebeurd, maar waar we niet veel over horen. Langzaam aan zien we Afrikaanse invloeden, in onze kleding en interieur, zoals mooi geweven manden en de Vlisco kleuren en stoffen, maar ook Moroso, heeft lokaal meubels laten maken. Voor de designers en ontwerpers zijn er veel hele interessante ontwikkelingen, bijvoorbeeld samenwerking tussen bedrijven en westerse overheidsinstellingen. Een voorbeeld daarvan is de Design Network Africa (DNA), zij worden gefinancieerd door de Deense overheid. Ontwikkelt en gecoordineerd door de Deense Centrum voor Cultuur en Ontwikkeling. Een onafhankelijk instituut, wat valt onder de Deense ministerie van buitenlandse zaken.

Dit project brengt bekende designers uit Oost, West en Zuid Afrika bijmekaar, die geselecteerd zijn op hun orginaliteit, identiteit en product. Het programma bestaat onder andere uit samenwerking en het ondersteunen bij lokale problematiek, mentoring en het gebruik van nieuwe productie systemen. Wat een effect heeft op andere lokale ondernemers, die geinspireerd worden en van hun expertise leren.Ze worden ondersteund door Deense ontwerpers en designers. Source is de organisatie die de in en export coordineert, op wereld niveau worden de produkten verhandelt.
