I wanted to make this blog post for a long time! When I first heard about Freunde von Freunden at the We Are Social meeting, at the design furniture fair IMM Cologne 2013, I looked FvF up on the internet and started to follow them. Reading the portrait stories and seeing the interiors and homes of all the friends and friends of friends is very inspiring. Getting to know the people behind the featured interiors a little bit is a really nice aspect of FvF and a refreshing, new, different approach of showing homes and interiors.FvF apartment Berlin
Then I read about the FvF apartment in the Mitte area in Berlin and that it’s furnished and styled in cooperation with Vitra, my favorite interior design brand. I think you now can imagine how high this spot was on my wish-list for a personal visit and a blog post. Finally, last April, I was in Berlin for blog event The Hive 2015 and got the chance to visit the apartment.Vitra and FvF
When I entered the apartment I felt at home immediately. That’s is no coincidence, because the apartment is designed like a home “for everyday life, reflecting how a creative, mobile and digitallyoriented generation lives” as Frederik tells in the Q&A below. The Vitra furniture fit in perfectly. Vitra also believes that a home is a personal collage that, in the course of time, will change with the preferences and the living conditions of the residents.  And you feel that vibe when you enter the apartment.Layout and floor plan
The bright apartment with high ceilings contains a living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and a spacious entrance. The floorplan is based on the original layout of the beautiful building. Some very clever additions, like the room dividing wall of plywood between the living room and bedroom that is also a cupboard, make this space into a modern and urban place.
I hope you enjoy the interview with Fredrik Frede of FvF and the look inside by the pictures I’ve made.  Tell me what you think!

FvF Q&A with Frederik Frede of Freunden von Freunden.

Can you tell us about yourself and why you started Freunde von Freunden?
Torsten Bergler and I started the creative agency NoMoreSleep (now called MoreSleep) in 2006. In 2009 we lost two major clients accounts following the global crisis and that was when we decided to immerse ourselves in more personal projects. We always wanted to do something fun for ourselves while having a personal reference as our goal. We looked at what was happening with fashion blogs and interiors, the changes in those digital environments and storytelling online. And as Facebook was popping up in Germany in 2009 too, we somehow immediately knew we should do a website where we tell the stories of our creative friends in Berlin and show how they live. And then we started interviewing the people around us. We got Timmi Seifert on board and then we took it from there.
How do you choose the apartments you feature?
We never look for apartments per se – mostly for people with intriguing stories. Individuals rather than spaces are the focal point of our features. In most cases we don’t even know what to expect when we visit someone at home. It’s important to note that what we do is not just about interiors – which are, of course, a great visual treat – but also about exploring cultural landscapes, different perspectives and introducing a diverse world to our readers.
How do you select your guests?
We want to stay true to our initial concept and portray friends of friends from our everexpanding network. From the beginning we literally worked with close friends and asked them if they wanted to suggest other friends. This is how we wish to continue. Our focus is on individuals who are inspiring and have great things to say. No matter if it‘s gardening, cooking or designing space shuttles! It’s difficult to put this in a box because that would limit FvF’s versatile and everevolving nature. Our content is becoming more diverse while we retain our identity. In terms of how we go about selecting people to portray, we’re constantly researching but also receive a lot of suggestions from our collaborators. There’s no golden rule for choosing a person as it always depends on each case in particular – and gut feeling.
And how does The FvF Apartment fit in there?
The FvF Apartment is a physical expression of our online publication – a multifaceted space for friends and partners to gather and express their creativity as well as interesting ideas. It is in the same house as our office and we use it for many occasions. It is an actual apartment with everything one could need on a daily basis. Everything in the apartment is meant for being used and we don’t see it as a cleancut showroom. It is more about the vision of how we see living in that kind of size and area of Berlin. It all came together through our partnership with Swiss manufacturer Vitra. Afterwards, many friends, local and international brands and partners were involved.

Can you tell us a bit about what the FvF apartment is for?
So, to be more precise, the FvF Apartment has been designed to be fully adaptable to the diverse and often unexpected scenarios of everyday life, reflecting how a creative, mobile and digitallyoriented generation lives. It serves not only as a platform for innovative products from friends and partners, but as a unique venue for events, workshops, and presentations. W e wanted to make sure to create a homely atmosphere where everyone would feel comfortable instantly and wouldn’t want to leave. Many of our partners do photoshoots or client meetings and use it as a reference point for their products when they’re in use. We have regular bookings for presentations, coachings, dinner, shootings, showroom and sleepovers.
Are there any artists, designers, or countries, cities or an interview at FvF where you have a preference for or who inspired you and why?
My favorite stories are the ones I feel more attached to contentwise and the ones that involve my friends. I can’t really pinpoint a favorite because they are all so different and very special in their own way. If I’d have to pick a really inspiring story that would be the one of Gwen and Gawie Fagan. It’s definitely in my top five, both in terms of story as well as photography.
———–
Thanks to FvF and Fredrik Frede.
I want to thank Frederik Frede for taking the time for this Q&A.  FvF is such an interesting concept. A home is made a home by the people who live in it. The FvF stories are a treat to read. Also I’m so glad I had a chance to see the FvF apartment in person.  Enjoy the pictures I took.
You can find a lot more inspiring portraits of people and their homes or workplaces at Freunde von Freunden.  Also a lot more of FvF in cooperation with Vitra at Vitra Magazine FvF  and Freunde von Freunden.

What has food to do with interior, design and furniture?

Well: Paola Navone, Sjoerd Vroonland and Linteloo presented a Delicatessen Store during the Milan Design Week, Salone del Mobile at the Zona Tortona District. ” Furniture, Food & Fun: A real delicatessen marketplace where the finest Italian and Dutch food and furniture meet.” as Linteloo says.
Paola turned the whole space around and filled it with Italian salami, mortadella and big fishes. Perhaps the de Saltuffo was the inspiration for the matching carpets! Black and white tiles contributed to the whole butcher, delicatessen feeling. Even the music played was personal picked by Paola and was all about  food! And don’t forget the special wallpaper.
In this beautiful and light space, the newest furniture designes by Paula were presented. A collection of sofas and side tables, to bring people together and create an informal and playful atmosphere.
Besides Paola’s designs called “Take it Easy” Linteloo also teamed up with Dutch designer Sjoerd Vroonland. He designed the “Butcher collection”

“Sjoerd Vroonland translated Linteloo’s feelgood factor and passion for food into the Butcher collection. “Think of an artisan baker, or the butchers of the past,” he says. “They were real craftsmen who made high-quality products with lots of love and attention. I’ve brought the same passion and attention to detail to the Butcher collection for Linteloo as these butchers and bakers. Also the details of their high-quality tools as a baking tray or a chopping block inspired me.”

The table he designed has clearly the form of a bulls head. The whole series is made out of light blond wood. Totally different of what you’re used to see from Linteloo, but I really like this new addition to the collection. A fresh look!
Upstairs in the Milan showroom, there was a more toned down and luxurious presentation of the interior line with lot’s of blue, grey and green tones, velvet fabrics, dark wood and XXXL knitted plaids. This collection showed the cast terrazzo table Hexagon and the Kigi tables by Roderick Vos and the new collection by Marcel Wolterinck for Verden by Linteloo.
What I like about Linteloo is the loose feeling of the designs. They feel so relaxed that you just want to jump right on the couch, cuddle up and stay there for a long time. Also the natural materials like linnen used as upholstery are my favourite: they wrinkle and contribute to that free and loose look. Perfect for a gathering with family and friends for a real ” Feel good factor!”

Turning in Circles

On the 28th of May 2015 Lidewij Edelkoort presented her view on the interior trends 2017 to a select group of interior and design lovers, interior- designers, stylists and manufacturers. She talked about “Turning in Circles”. Literally, figuratively and also symbolically.
“We grow slowly towards an democratic and holistic society. A new way of thinking, optimistic and sociable. Forms and materials are more democratic too. More inviting.”

Lidewij Edelkoort

Li Edelkoort presented a wonderful series of inspiring images, while commenting and talking about the background and depths behind the images. Also explaining and suggesting shapes, materials and textures. I spent the entire presentation just letting the images and words do their work and made as many notes as I could. Just wonderful to be there. Lidewij works in a way that I really appreciate. From thorough research she and her team will give a glimpse of the future, with depth, many handles and insights and also sometimes a fair criticism. Along to the presentation Edelkoort makes a new book for every presentation that is sold separately, containing many images and true color swatches.

NII | Nederlands Interieur Instituut

The Trend presentations by Li Edelkoort are very inspiring and a must see for interior designer or stylist. The  NII [Dutch Interior Institute] makes it possible to join the presentation. The NII is especially for the [Dutch] interior and lifestyle industry and aims to pass trends. They do this by organizing the trend presentations of Lidewij, but also by providing the trend tour during Salone del Mobile in Milan. If you are interested in a memberships please contact NII.

Valuable

I find it very valuable to attend these events and lectures. Not to know what color cushions you should advise your client. I am not in favor of literally take over and apply trends. The whole point is to see and learn where trends come from. See the backgrounds and the expressions of it. What materials and shapes come with it: Understand the whole story! And thus make correct, personal considerations and choices. Your own translation to indicate these trends that live on a deeper level in the society and the world. This makes that you can give your clients in a solid and personal design and advice. Just because you have the depth. That perhaps makes you different from the other interior designer or stylist. And because you may not have all the time in the world in your daily working life to go to all exhibitions and events, or to go trend watching yourself, attending a high-quality trend-event a well investment. In addition, the NII provides a 2 weekly email for members only, showing the trend spots and more insight trend information, selected by trend experts. I would say: DO IT!
More information can be found at the NII | Dutch Interior Institute.
Right after the presentation of Li Edelkoort “Turning in Circles” I saw circles popping up everywhere. Like in these pictures made during the “Design Kwartier” in The Hague last sunday.

Enjoy!!

Draaien in cirkels

Geniet!

Brabantia droogmolen | Love Nature | WeForest
by C-More

Brabantia asked if I would like to test and review their rotary drying rack. And I love to! Around this time of the year, when spring has begun, I really like to get the wash to dry outdoors. The drying rack I had was broken and I needed a new one, so this test and try came just in the right time.
I live in the middle of the city, but fortunately have a big and green garden and there is enough space to put the rack right in a spot I want it to be.  As you can see I mostly wear black and don’t want my clothes to be bleached by the sun. That’s why I used a portable concrete parasol foot instead of the metal soil spear that Brabantia developed for this top spinner drying rack. However, this ground tube is very handy and you can put it in the ground so deep that you don’t see it when not in use. And: you can mow your grass right over it.

The top spinner I tested is the ROTARY DRYER Essential, 50 mtr. in a silver color, with ground tube. The drying rack is very solid and folds open like an umbrella. That makes sure that the wires are always firm and tight. Also it’s very easy and quickly foldable for storage. For me that is very important: I have a busy life and don’t want to get irritated by dysfunctional utensils. Than I simply don’t use them anymore.

Some more useful information about the rotary dryer:

  • Easy to operate adjustable ‘Umbrella’ system – always taut drying lines – retensionable in 2 positions
  • Sturdy hanging loop – easy storage
  • Includes plastic ground tube with closable cap – easy to place in concrete – no obstacles in your garden or terrace
  • Extra quality, UV-resistant washing line with non-slip profile – easy to replace separate lines
  • All arms fitted with special holes for clothes hangers – ideal for drying delicate laundry
  • Available separately: ø 35 mm metal ground spike with closable cap for sturdy anchorage without concrete (code 1)
  • Available separately: weather resistant cover – easy to put on and to remove – zip fastener along entire length
  • Besides that I love my delicate clothes to dry outside in fresh air, I also save a lot of energy by not using a dryer. It’s better for the wallet and for the planet. But Brabantia takes this even a step further: Brabantia together with WeForest, will plant a tree for every rotary dryer you buy. You can read more about that here at the Brabantia Love Nature site. And if you are quick, you even can win some nice prices!

    Enjoy!!

    Frise kleding | Brabantia droogmolen

    Love Nature | zomer!

    Geniet !!
