A few weeks ago I was invited by HAY | Wrong London at Flinders [ a Dutch online and offline Design shop ] for the launch of the new lighting designs by wrong.london and HAY. Perfect timing for the time of the year where the days’ get short on this side of the globe.

Designer Sebastian Wrong himself was present to tell about his vision on the new designs and also showed us how much time and thought was given to the technical side, material choices, and function of the lamps.

For this new line of lamps, wrong.london and HAY worked with several designers like Pierre Charpin, Bertjan Pot and also with upcoming Rotterdam designer Johan van Hengel. For one of the designs, the Drum Shade, they also worked with Vlisco, a Dutch textile brand, well known for its beautiful African textile designs and Kvadrat, a Danish textile brand.

My favorite is the Turn On lamp, but also the new designs like the Marble Pendant, made out of solid white, black or green marble, the functional and bendable PC Task Light and 30 Degree, with a lightweight, 30-degree angle shade made out of oak, are on my favorite list.

Personally, I’m very happy to see wrong.london, Hay, Vlisco and Kvadrat working together, but for me, the designs are still a bit to obvious. I hope in the future they will come with some more “out of the box” designs :-) Honestly: I can’t wait to see this happen… I’m a big fan of all the brands!

nieuwe verlichting designs

Een paar weken geleden werd ik uitgenodigd door HAY | wrong.londen bij Flinders, een online en offline design winkel, voor de lancering van de nieuwe verlichting ontwerpen van wrong.london en Hay. Perfecte timing voor deze tijd van het jaar waarin de dagen korter worden!

Ontwerper Sebastian Wrong was zelf aanwezig om te vertellen over zijn visie op de nieuwe ontwerpen en liet ons ook zien hoeveel tijd en aandacht is besteed aan de technische en functionele kant, de materiaal keuzes en de functie van de lampen.

Mijn favoriet is de Turn On lamp, maar ook de nieuwe ontwerpen zoals de Marble plafond lamp, gemaakt uit massief wit, zwart of groen marmer, de functionele en buigbare PC Task Light en 30 Degree, met een lichtgewicht eiken kap in een 30-graden hoek , staan op mijn favoriete lijst.

Persoonlijk ben ik erg blij om te zien dat wrong.london, Hay, Vlisco en Kvadrat samen werken, maar voor mij zijn die ontwerpen nog wel een beetje voor de hand liggend. Ik hoop dat ze in de toekomst nog gaan komen met een aantal “out of the box” designs :-) Eerlijk gezegd: Ik kan niet wachten om dat te zien gebeuren … Ik ben een grote fan van al deze merken!

When going to Berlin, don’t forget to pack this small but great little book Carl goes Berlin!

If you go for a city trip, holiday or longer stay, Carl makes you a citizen for 3days, 3 weeks or 3 months! Throughout a very personal insight of Berlin, you get to know the City and the people bit by bit.

In 4 chapters you get the ins and outs of the cities stay essentials, like facts and figures, getting out there, a city map, events and neighborhoods. Also tips about how to work, find a job, where to find a nice office space or where to live for short or long terms. Design hotels, city apartments, cafe’s, breakfast tips and much more. Last but not least, my favorite chapter: Getting away and getting lost.

The whole book gives you a good insight of how the city of Berlin is, from a local point of view, staying away from the tourist hotspots, so you can blend in more and feel like a Citizen.

Besides that, I love the photography and clear layout of the book. You easily find what you ar looking for and get really inspired.

WANNEER JE NAAR BERLIJN GAAT….

CARL GOES BERLIN | BOEKBESPREKING | REIZEN

Wanneer je naar Berlijn gaat, vergeet dan niet om dit kleine maar geweldige boekje “Carl goes Berlin” mee te pakken!

Ga je voor een city trip, vakantie van langer verblijf, Carl maakt je een “Citizen” voor 3 dagen, 3 weken of 3 maanden! Door je een zeer persoonlijk kijkje in Berlijn te geven, maak je snel kennis met de stad en de locals.

In 4 hoofdstukken krijg je de ins en outs en de “essentials” van de stad, de feiten en cijfers, waar te beginnen, een plattegrond van de stad, evenementen en leuke buurten. Ook tips over hoe en waar je kunt werken, een baan kan vinden, waar een mooie kantoorruimte is of waar je een woonplek voor korte of lange termijn te vinden. Design hotels, stads appartementen, cafe’s, ontbijt tips en nog veel meer. Last but not least, mijn favoriet hoofdstuk: er op uit gaan en op goed geluk gaan dwalen door de slad.

Het hele boek geeft een goed inzicht in de stad Berlijn, vanuit een “local” oogpunt, door weg te blijven van de toeristische hotspots. Je beleeft daardoor de stad meer also je er zlef woont.

Daarbij is de mooie fotografie en duidelijke lay-out van het boek heel prettig . Je vindt makkelijk wat je zoekt en raakt echt geïnspireerd.

Carl goes Berlin is een mooi boekje om kado te geven bijvoorbeeld voor kerst of verjaardag of zomaar. Of voor jezelf, bij het plannen van een stedentrip of langer verblijf in Berlijn.

Dutch Design Week 2016

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably have noticed I’m at the Dutch Design Week, for my yearly doses of Design and Trend input. The Dutch Design Week, also known as DDW, is such a unique event.

I think you can compare it best with the outside events of the Milan design week, like Ventura Lambrate. Lot’s of young, new designers, but also students and innovative brands are represented. There is so much to see, that you easily can stay the whole week and even then you probably missed some spots.

For me this year a few things were most outstanding: Lot’s of color and material research! One of the biggest examples of this is the exhibition ” Everything but the product” by Envisions, a group of last years graduated students of the Eindhoven Design Academy, who showcased their products and designs for the first time in Milan last April.

Below a selection of my finds until now. If you have the chance to go visit the Dutch Design Week for yourself: please do! You don’t want to miss this. Besides the uniqueness of this yearly event, with a never-ending input of design, you probably will be surprised by the warm and welcome feeling of the overall event, with all the designers who are willing to talk to you in person and explain their visions and concepts. But also the nice spots to eat and drink and relax are amazing.

Dutch Design Week 2016

Als je me volgt op Instagram, heb je waarschijnlijk al gemerkt dat ik deze week bij de Nederlandse Design Week ben, voor mijn jaarlijkse doses Design en Trend inspiratie. De Dutch Design Week, ook wel bekend als DDW, is zo’n uniek evenement.

Ik denk dat je het het best kunt vergelijken met Ventura Lambrate in Milaan tijdens de Designweek. Veel jonge, nieuwe ontwerpers maar ook studenten en innovatieve merken zijn vertegenwoordigd. Er is zoveel te zien, dat je makkelijk de hele week kunt blijven en zelfs dan waarschijnlijk nog niet alles hebt gezien.

Voor mij is dit jaar het meest opvallend: Heel veel kleur en materiaal onderzoek! Een van de grootste voorbeelden hiervan is de tentoonstelling “Alles behalve het product” van Envisions , een groep vorig jaar afgestudeerde studenten van de Design Academy Eindhoven, die hun producten en ontwerpen voor het eerst in Milaan hebben tentoongesteld, afgelopen april.

Hieronder vind je een selectie van mijn vondsten tot nu toe. Als je de kans hebt om zelf de DDW te gaan bezoeken: doen! Je wilt dit niet missen. Naast het unieke karakter van dit jaarlijks evenement, met een enrome hoeveelheid design, zul je waarschijnlijk verrast zijn door het warme en gastvrije gevoel van het totale evenement, waar alle ontwerpers bereid zijn om je persoonlijk te woord te staan en hun visies en concepten uit te leggen. Maar ook al die leuke plekjes om wat te eten en te drinken en te ontspannen zijn fantastisch.

My heart alway skips a beat when my eye catches a beautiful of interesting fabric. Same with colors. It makes me happy. That’s exactly what happened when I was invited by Kvadrat Amsterdam to join the launch of the new Kvadrat | Raf Simons collection. I was honored to be part of it.

Kvadrat designs and makes the most beautiful textiles for interior, furniture and accessories and is my favorite company to work with. The Danish roots are founded in 1968. Since then Kvadrat worked with several architects and designers like Tord Boontje, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Patricia Urquiola and many more. And now, since 2014, also with fashion designer Raf Simons. You can’t make me more happy, with these kind of collaborations.

Raf Simons, born in Belgium, studied industrial design in Genk. He moved to Antwerp, inspired by the work of conceptual fashion designer Martin Margiela, to study Fashion at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, but was encouraged to start his own label right way in 1995. Luckily he did: Raf Simons menswear had huge impact on the style of the decade.

After being the artistic director of the Jil Sander label since 2005, Raf became the creative director for Dior Women. He is now concentrating on his own label and, since this Augustus, joined Calvin Klein as creative director. Raf Simons is a passionate collector of contemporary art and modern design and is known for his vital, sophisticated modernism.

Raf Simons has applied his Kvadrat upholstery designs for the first time in 2014 for his own menswear collection which he designed in collaboration with artist Sterling Ruby. After that time, he designed several fabrics for Kvadrat and showed it in a few fashion collections he did for Dior. So, that’s enough information for now I think! Just go wander around in the pictures below, where you will find the newest Raf Simons | Kvadrat collection, inspired by the modern nautical upholstery of Franco Albini’s suspended Poltrona Seggiovia (Chairlift Chair) of 1940, which resulted in 3 textile collections: Reflex, Pulsar and Fuse. I find the collection very refreshing, with a hint of the history of the early modernists in it. Very graphic and with beautiful colors. The collection is distributed by selected dealers. Suitable for furniture upholstery, contemporary fashion designs and also available as a beautiful pillow collection.

Mijn hart gaat altijd sneller kloppen als ik mooie of interessante stoffen zie. Het zelfde heb ik met kleuren cobinaties. Het maakt me blij. Dat is precies wat er gebeurde toen ik door Kvadrat Amsterdam werd uitgenodigd om de lancering van de nieuwe Kvadrat | Raf Simons collectie mocht bijwonen. Ik was zeer vereerd om er bij te zijn.

Kvadrat ontwerpt en maakt de mooiste stoffen voor interieur, meubels en accessoires en is mijn favoriete bedrijf om mee te werken. De Deense “roots” stammen al uit 1968. Sindsdien heeft Kvadrat samen gewerkt en collecties ontwikkeld met vele architecten en ontwerpers als Tord Boontje, Ronan en Erwan Bouroullec, Patricia Urquiola en nog velen meer. En nu, sinds 2014, ook met modeontwerper Raf Simons. Je kunt mij niet meer gelukkig maken, dan met dit soort samenwerkingen.

Raf Simons, geboren in België, studeerde industriële vormgeving in Genk. Hij verhuisde in 1995 naar Antwerpen, geïnspireerd door het werk van de conceptuele mode-ontwerper Martin Margiela, om Fashion te gaan studeren aan de Koninklijke Academie van Antwerpen, maar werd aangemoedigd om direct zijn eigen label te gaan beginnen. Gelukkig deed hij dat: Raf Simons menswear had grote invloed op de fashion stijl van afgelopen decennium.

In 2005 starte Raf Simons als artistiek directeur van het Jil Sander label en werd later creatief directeur van Dior Women. Momenteel is Raf zich aan het focussen op zijn eigen label en sinds afgelopen augustus tevens bij Calvin Klein als creatief directeur. Hij is een gepassioneerd verzamelaar van hedendaagse kunst en modern design en staat bekend om zijn vitale, verfijnde modernistische stijl.

Raf Simons heeft zijn Kvadrat stofontwerpen voor het eerst in 2014 toegepast in fashion, voor zijn eigen mannencollectie, die hij in samenwerking met kunstenaar Sterling Ruby ontwlierp. Na die tijd, heeft hij verschillende stoffen voor Kvadrat ontwikkeld en in verschillende mode collecties van Dior toegepast. Kristina Dam Studio has a mission: making art and merge this with interior as in furniture, art prints, illustrations and images. The materials used are fair and carefully picked, such as brass, marble, mirror, oak, steel and glass.

The objects from the collection consist of natural colors. Each object has thorough designed details, but also simplicity. This makes the item serene, but an eye-catcher.

Kristina Dam is a graduate of the Royal Danish School of Fine and Performing Arts, Architecture and Design. In her designs, you will find her great love for architecture and minimalist, graphic lines. Her first product – a number of limited edition artwork – quickly became a favorite in Scandinavian design shops, magazines and houses. Today Kristina Dam Studio creates two collections a year and she works together with talented and established designers.

In her new collection, she has a great bench and book-keeper designed, these items express very well where Kristina stands for.

The Vertical Bench is the smaller version of the previously produced “daybed”. This beautiful small version is made of natural oak and soft brown leather. Hand-made connections in the wood show the quality of this beautiful piece of furniture. A nice piece of timber-framed mastership, pure and beautiful. Simple with an edge!

The Bookkeeper is made of steel, available in black and white. A wonderful product for your beautiful book collection. The minimalist design combined with the sturdy steel, without losing it’s functionality, makes this piece a must-have!

In haar nieuwe collectie heeft ze een o.a. een prachtig bankje en boekenstandaard ontworpen, deze items laat goed zien waar Kristina voor staat.

De Vertical Bench is de kleinere versie van de reeds eerder geproduceerde daybed. Deze mooie kleine versie is gemaakt van naturel eiken en zacht bruin leer. De handgemaakte verbindingen in het hout laten de kwaliteit van dit prachtige meubel zien. Een prachtig stukje vakwerk dat doordacht, zuiver en mooi is. Simpel mét een randje!

De boekenstandaard Bookkeeper is gemaakt van staal, verkrijgbaar in zwart en wit. Een mooi en grafisch product om je verzameling boeken te presenteren. Door het minimalistische design in combinatie met het stoere staal, zonder de functionaliteit te verliezen, is dit voor mij een aanrader.

Bekijk de prachtige beelden, deze spreken voor zich. Op mijn bucketlist: Een bezoek aan haar Studio in Kopenhagen!
