Yes, another book review! Again a book by Abigail Ahern : ” Decorating with Style “. She is the queen of styling and moody colors in my opinion. Although I’m more of a minimalist, I certainly love working with color and styling. Even if you don’t use much color or props in your home, you still need to make it look and feel good.

And that’s where Abigail comes in. She as no other shows in this book how you can learn to create vignettes and styling your decorative items in your home. I think this book is for everyone who loves to be creative and needs some inside information about “how to…” Even I myself!

I’m an interior designer and love to work with the big picture, how and where to put the walls, furniture, lighting fixtures and to make an interior work well, to feel good and make everything coherent . Even I struggle with the styling sometimes. Thats why I’m convinced an interior and the styling has to grow.

Every now and then you change the items, add some new and kill some of your darlings. Try, play, analyse, change and repeat… that’s the only way you learn, and develop your own style.

But to get a bit on the right track, Abigail reveals a lot of her styling secrets and tips in this book. She helps you to find your style, keeps pushing you to just do it and to make mistakes and learn from them. “Don’t play safe” she says. I agree.

She tells you all about how to combine colors, textiles and patterns, how to be creative with small spaces, where to put your furniture, use texture, storage tips, lighting fixtures, decorative paint….. I can go on forever. So keep in mind that even if Abigail Ahern’s style is not yours, you can still learn a lot from this book. I think it will be my styling bible for a long time!

So: go grab this book, put it on your Christmas wish-list, ask it for your birthday…. and read it from the from to the back, or as I do, from the back to the front and then again and again, whenever you need some inspiration, courage and a boost in the right direction.

Ja, ee boek revieuw! En dit keer weer een boek van Abigail Ahern : “Decorating with Style “. Zij is naar mijn mening, de koningin van de styling en donkere, stemmige kleuren. Hoewel ik ben meer van een minimalistisch interieur houd, werk ik wel graag met kleur en styling. Zelfs als je niet veel kleur of accessoires wilt gebruiken in huis, moet het weinige dat je toepast nog steeds mooi zijn, inspireren en goed voelen.

En dat is waar Abigail er bij komt kijken. Zij, als geen ander, toont je in dit boek hoe je zelf kunt leren hoe je styling stillevens creëert en hoe je je decoratieve voorwerpen en je meubels kunt stylen. Ik denk dat dit boek heel geschikt is voor iedereen die graag creatief is maar ook wel wat “inside” informatie kan gebruiken.

Zelfs ik! Ik ben een interieur ontwerper en houd mij meestal bezig met het grote geheel: hoe en waar de muren komen, de plek van de meubels, de verlichting plannen, de materialen, eigenlijk alle voorwaarden om een interieur goed te laten werken, je er goed in te voelen en het een goede samenhang heeft. Maar ook ik kan soms wel eens worstelen met de styling. Dat is waarom ik ervan overtuigd ben dat een interieur en de styling echt moet groeien.Zo nu en dan moet je de items te veranderen, wisselen, wat nieuws toevoegen en wat van je lievelings items weg doen. Probeer, spelen, analyseren, vanderen en dit riedeltje opnieuw herhalen … dat is de enige manier om het te leren en je eigen stijl te ontwikkelen.

Maar om je een beetje op het juiste spoor te krijgen, onthult Abigail veel van haar styling geheimen en tips in dit boek. Ze helpt je om jouw stijl te vinden, blijft je uitdagen om het te proberen en om fouten te maken en daarvan te leren. “Niet te veilig spelen”, zegt ze. Ik ben het daar mee eens!

Ze vertelt je alles over hoe je kleuren, stoffen en patronen, combineert, hoe je creatief met kleine ruimtes omgaat, waar je je meubels zet, je textuur toepast, opruim tips, verlichting, decoratieve verf … .. Ik kan eeuwig doorgaan. Dus hou in gedachten dat zelfs als Abigail Ahern’s stijl is niet jouw stijl is, kun je nog heel veel leren van dit boek. Ik denk dat het mijn styling bijbel voor een lange tijd gaat zijn!

Dus: ga voor dit boek, zet het op je kerst verlanglijstje, vraag het voor je verjaardag ….

My heart skipped a beat when I saw this new marble wallpaper by Piet Hein Eek for NLXL! What a great design! Marble is seen everywhere these days, so its very trendy, but it also has this minimal look. You can use it in many ways and in many interior styles. And now with this NLXL wallpaper you can create an instant minimal or even luxe interior. The white and black wallpaper is a print of an original marble floor of an old building in Amsterdam. For these kind of old buildings, the marble was cut in slabs and flipped to create a mirrored look. Very beautiful! NLXL and Piet created the roll just like this: “There’s one roll of marble wallpaper, another roll that’s the mirror image of it, and in marble they call this an open book. It becomes almost a kind of graphical illustration.”

Saturday the wallpaper will be lounged at Piet Hein Eek in Eindhoven NL during the famous Dutch Design Week DDW15 along with some other beautiful new wallpaper designs like the Black Brick, which is great too, the Silver Grey Brick and Burnt wood, [ love it!] and Blue Scrapwood Wallpapers.

Mijn hart sloeg over toen ik dit nieuwe marmer behang van Piet Hein Eek voor NLXL zag. Wat een geweldig design! Marmer is nu overal te zien, dus het is heel trendy, maar het heeft ook een heel minimalistische look. Je kunt het op heel veel manieren toepassen en in vele interieurstijlen. En nu met dit NLXL behang kun je super eenvoudig een groot gebaar maken en een minimalistich, strak of zelfs luxe interieur creëren. De witte en zwarte print is een afdruk van een originele marmeren vloer van een oud gebouw in Amsterdam. Voor dit soort van oude gebouwen werden de marmeren platen gesneden en “geflipt” om een gespiegelde look te creëren. Erg mooi! NLXL en Piet creëerde de behangrol volgends dit zelfde principe: “Je hebt de ene rol marmer behang, en de andere rol behang, die het spiegelbeeld daarvan is. In marmer noemen ze dit een “open boek”. Het wordt bijna een soort grafische illustratie. “

Zaterdag wordt het behang gelanceerd bij Piet Hein Eek in Eindhoven tijdens de beroemde Dutch Design Week | DDW15 , samen met nog een aantal andere mooie nieuwe behang ontwerpen, zoals de Black Brick, die ook prachtig is, en de Silver Grey Brick, het Burnt Wood, [love it!] en de Blue Scrapwood behangen.

Yesterday I visited the Salon Residence event in the Singer Museum in Laren NL. This event is organized by the Dutch interior magazine Residence.

It’s not comparable with any other Dutch interior event. This is a place where you wonder around rooms, full with design, fabrics, unique pieces, artwork, paintings and so on…

A bit of a contrast to my own taste about design and more minimalistic style, but on the other hand it triggered me too. As a color and textile lover, I couldn’t be in a better place. And as a moody color and Dutch Master painting lover, it was even better. All rooms looked like if they were styled for a movie and furnished by famous Dutch Interiordesigners an curators.

DE NIEUWE LUXE WONEN TREND

BIJ HET NEDERLANDSE SINGER MUSEUM

Gisteren bezocht ik het Salon Residence evenement in het Singer Museum in Laren. Dit evenement wordt georganiseerd door het Nederlandse interieur tijdschrift Residence. Het is niet te vergelijken met andere Nederlandse interieur evenementen. Dit is een plek waar je dromend door de kamers, vol met design, stoffen, unieke stukken, kunstwerken, schilderijen en ga zo maar door, dwaalt…

Een beetje een contrast met mijn eigen design smaak en minimalistische stijl, maar aan de andere kant prikkelt en intrigeert het me ook. Als kleur en textiel lover, kon ik niet op een betere plek zijn. En als een “moody” kleuren en Hollandse Meesters liefhebber, was het zelfs nog beter. Alle kamers zagen eruit alsof ze voor een film gestyled zijn en zijn ingericht door bekende Nederlandse interieur ontwerpers en curators.

What a great compliment for Dutch Wallpaper Brand NLXL
and Dutch Designers/ Artists Studio Job to win the best wall covering award
2014 at ICFF for the “ Archives by Studio Job” collection.

NLXL Founder Rick Vintage
says “For a small Dutch company to win the award
twice is just outrageous. We basically try to make striking products and
have a lot of fun. Winning this award emphasizes that putting fun first simply
works. Off course all credit goes to Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel of Studio
Job. This one is for their incredible talent!” 

The ”Archives by Studio Job” collection was on display
at ICFF and in all 6 windows of the Alexander McQueen presentation at Saks Fifth Avenue NYC.

I saw the collection for the first time when I visited
Zona Tortona during the Design Week in Milan last April.[see pictures below]

But of course I know
NLXL for a long time from their scrap-wood wallpaper with Piet Hein Eek [which
they won also an ICFF price with!], the Brooklyn Tins wallpaper with Merci
Paris and the concrete wallpaper with Piet Boon. And I know Studio Job too.
I’ve even had an interview lunch with Studio Job last October. So I was thrilled to see the new collection.

The collection is called Archives because NLXL literally
dived in the archives of Studio Job. Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel are well
known for their archetypical drawings. They put these universal symbols
together in an iconographic pattern and composition.

The original patterns were
created for other design projects, fashion shows of Viktor & Rolf, or their
own artwork. This series of 7 new wallpaper designs is a reinterpretation of
them.

And as Job Smeeds says: “However,
I don’t expect that aesthetes will paste them side by side in this way. This is
wallpaper for advanced decorators; you can use these patterns to create your
own conceptual wall. This is not standard wallpaper. These are 9-metre-long
compositions.”

When I visited the booth of NLXL at IFCC I asked how
the people in NYC reacted to this new collection. “ They love it” was the
answer. And I can fully understand why. We, over here in the Netherlands where
I live, don’t
use that much wallpaper anymore since the 70s and almost all houses have white
walls, due to designer Jan Des Bouvrie and the “ Goed Wonen” movement. In contrast to the Americans who do use more decorative wallpaper.So I immediately can see why this can be a great success. I wonder if this new Wallpaper makes a chance for the Netherlands too….

And what a great way to
make a personal statement, with this wallpaper.

Job smeets says it like this: The end result is not a
neutral, objective picture like you can create with traditional wallpaper. If
you cover your wall with this wallpaper, you really bring something home. This
goes beyond styling. “But where do you hang your paintings?”, I hear someone grumble.
My reply: The plain white wall behind a painting is an idea from modernism. In
the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it was not uncommon to display
paintings on silk wallpaper with very busy patterns. But let me put it another
way: with this wallpaper you no longer need any paintings. Viewed in this way –
per running meter – it is relatively cheap art.’

And so it is.

The Archives Wallpaper is available in 7 patterns with
no repeat: Industry, Labyrinth,
Perished, Alt Deutsch, l’Afrique and Withered Flowers, black & white
and Withered Flowers in color.

NLXL en Studio Job winnen bij ICFF

de beste behang | wandbekleding award.

Wat een groot compliment voor het Nederlandse Behang merk NLXL en de ontwerpers / kunstenaars Studio Job!

Zij wonnen ” the best wall covering award 2014 bij ICFF in New York afgelopen mei.

NLXL Oprichter Rick Vintage zegt: “Het is voor een klein Nederlands bedrijf waanzinnig om twee twee de award te winnen! We proberen opvallende producten te maken en hebben daar veel plezier in. Het winnen van deze award onderstreept plezier maken gewoon werkt. Natuurlijk gaat alle eer naar Job Smeets en Nynke Tynagel van Studio Job. Dat is voor hun ongelooflijke talent! “

De “Archives door Studio Job” collectie werd tentoongesteld in ICFF NY en in alle 6 de etalageramen van de Alexander McQueen bij Saks Fifth Avenue NYC.

Ik zag de collectie voor de eerste keer toen ik Zona Tortona tijdens de Design Week in Milaan bezocht, afgelopen april.[zie foto’s hierboven] Maar natuurlijk ken ik NLXL al een lange tijd door de afval-hout behangcollectie met Piet Hein Eek (waarmee ze eerder een ICFF award me wonnen!), De Brooklyn Tins behangcollectie in samenwerking met Merci Parijs en natuurlijk het beton behang met Piet Boon. En ik ken Studio Job ook. Ik heb zelfs een lunch-interview met ze gehouden vorig jaar oktober. Dus ik was blij om de nieuwe collectie te zien.

De collectie heet Archives want NLXL is letterlijk de archieven van Studio Job ingedoken. Job Smeets en Nynke Tynagel staan bekend om hun archetypische tekeningen. Ze verwerken deze universele symbolen samen in een iconografisch patroon. De originele patronen zijn eerder speciaal gemaakt voor diverse andere design projecten, zoals de modeshows van Viktor & Rolf, of komen uit kunstwerk.

Deze serie van 7 nieuwe behang dessins zijn een herinterpretatie van deze patronen. Job Smeeds zegt: “Maar ik verwacht niet dat estheten het gewoon naast elkaar op de wand plakken.

Dit is behang voor gevorderde decorateurs: je kunt deze patronen gebruiken om een eigen conceptuele muur te creëren. Dit is niet het standaard behang. Dit zijn 9 meter lange composities.”

Toen ik bij de stand van NLXL op IFCC New York was ik vroeg hoe de mensen in NYC gereageerd op deze nieuwe collectie. “Ze vinden het fantastisch , was het antwoord. En ik kan volledig begrijpen waarom.

Hier in Nederland, gebruiken we, in tegenstelling tot de Amerikanen, sinds de jaren ’70 niet veel behang meer

en bijna alle huizen hebben witte muren, als gevolg de nieuwe stroming in het interieur door oa ontwerper Jan des Bouvrie en de “Goed Wonen “beweging. In America wordt wel veel decoratief behang toegepast. Ik geloof direct dat dit een groot succes kan worden. Ik ben benieuwd of dit

nieuwe behang ook weer een opleving van gedecoreerde wanden in Nederland gaat betekenen…

Job Smeets zegt het als volgt: “Het eindresultaat is niet een neutraal, objectief beeld zoals je krijgt bij traditioneel behang. Als je dit behang toepast dan heb je echt iets in huis. Dit gaat verder dan styling. “Maar waar moet je je schilderijen ophangen?” Hoor al ik iemand mopperen. Mijn antwoord: De gewone witte muur achter een schilderij is een idee van het modernisme. In de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw, was het niet ongewoon om schilderijen op zijde behang met met zeer drukke patronen te plaatsen. Maar laat ik het anders zeggen: met dit behang heb je geen schilderijen meer nodig…… En als je het zo bekijkt is het – per strekkende meter – relatief goedkope kunst!”

En zo is het.
